In 2009-10, VSSU was partnered with the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore for a project called “A Value Chain on Wild Honey Bee” under the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), a World Bank Supported programme . Collecting wild honey in the Sunderban Forest is one of the main occupations in the Sunderbans (the Sunderbans (SHOON-dur- bans) are a coastal area & home to the world’s largest mangrove forest). Due to the scarcity of work opportunities, people in this area accept honey farming as a livelihood despite the dangers giant honeybees, tigers, crocodiles and other wild animals pose. This project is funded by the World Bank through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and many people in the honey business will have the opportunity to work in this project.
