Organic farming & Agricultural Development : Agriculture in India is the means of livelihood of almost two-thirds of the work force in the country. It has always been India’s most important economic sector. VSSU has already collected more than 100 acres of land to be used for livelihood promotion. VSSU has also provided 12% of its total loans to the agriculture farmers. Recently VSSU is implementing a organic farming programme in collaboration of Agriculture dept of WB viz. Parampragat Krishi Vikash Yoyona ( of NAMSA), for which #50 local farmers are implementing a organic farming demonstration & awareness center over 150 acres of land , where VSSU will cultivate and make arrangements for the organic produces.
Fishery Traditionally, fish is an important part of the West Bengal diet and fish production is a major industry in the coastal states. There is a strong consumer preference for fresh-water fish, but marine fish is also preferred in the coastal areas. In South 24 Parganas 2.5 lakh people are involved in fisheries and most are Scheduled Caste (SC); also 50% of them are BPL. VSSU assists the fishermen financially by providing them with loans so that they can invest money in their business. Even more, VSSU has also collected 34 acres of ponds and canals to build an educational centre for the fishermen.
